Multi-Camera Evaluation

During our first multi-camera production we decided to do a paranormal multi-camera. We came to the idea by brainstorming ideas. We were talking about implementing ways to scare the audience while keeping in theme with the main show. We decided to go with the whole paranormal idea. We built up on the idea more and the initial idea of scaring the audience was pushed out the way to prioritize making an actual production.

Purposes of a Music Video: Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Reason For Research
Considering the time this video was produced, it is very well made with the effects and shots. The video is made up of the band performing and there are multiple effects using shadows, silhouettes and some good lighting. This is another video I would highly consider taking from as I can easily get hold of a theatre studio and it would be nice to play with some cool effects.

Purposes of a Music Video: Guns N' Roses - Estranged

Reason For Research
During the video, they have the chorus showing a short movie while at the chorus they have the band performing. Considering the year it was produced, it looks like a fairly high budget video because of the locations used and the smooth crane shots. This is a video I'm seriously considering to take a lot from with the idea of a story type video then the band performing during the chorus.

Purposes of a Music Video: OK Go - This Too Shall Pass

Reason For Research
From what I have seen from OK Go, they use extremely creative music videos. This music video really fits in with the rest of their videos. It looks as if it's a one shot video, but according to YouTuber Freddie Wong, there are some hidden cuts. This may be a bit of a difficult setup for me to do because if the extreme planning and length of time to create. It's still a very creative setup and worth looking into certain elements such as the one take or the Rube Goldberg machine.

Purposes of a Music Video: Owl City, Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time (Lyric Video)

Reason For Research
I decided I'd look into a lyric music video that uses kinetic typography. I love how the text is dynamically animated onto the screen. I did some research to find that some of the cartoon animations are actually made by a YouTuber who lets people pay royalty fees to use them.
This style of music video will be very time consuming as there is a lot of editing work to do. This may not be an appropriate idea for me as I will have a very tight deadline.

Purposes of a Music Video: Michael Jackson - Black or White

Reason For Research
The introduction to Black or White is very creative. It shows a stereo typical American family with the angry dad and the son listening to loud music. There are a good lot of effects used in the beginning and very good graphical match transitions.
I really like the way that Michael Jackson goes through different countries and blends each one into the next.
From my understanding, the theme behind this music video is an anti racist theme. The video really matches the song by relating the anti-racist lyrics to the multi-cultural shots.
The ending is amazing how they morph into each person who are a difference race, and when they get to the end they show a little cut as if it were behind the scenes with the camera, the backdrop and the director complementing the actress.

Purposes of a Music Video: Blur - Park Life

Reason For Research
The song Park Life is a very british song, and the music has a british vibe to support the song. You see shots like british houses, Ice Cream Vans, Post Boxes and various other items in shot. There are quite a lot of jumpy cuts to support the fast tempo up beat song.
The quality of the music video doesn't seem high budget, which makes it a good choice for research for my production as I won't have a high budget.

Thriller EPK Campaign

Looking through my questionnaire research I have come to the following conclusion. I can see a lot of people tend to find out more about movies through common advertisements such as posters and trailers. It seems that the more used ways work best. There are some exceptions when people use unique ways to advertise, but this tends to cost a lot more for the budget. Other people occasionally use websites like IMDb to see up coming movies. The way people look at these new movies tend to be by looking at their favourite actors to see what they are going to be in next, or see what the top director is going to be working on next.

DVD Cover Design Process - DVD Cover

I wanted to start with a darker case to fit in with more of the thriller style of things. I decided to include the title on the front and spine and also a little bit about the movie. I used a simple font just to get me started.

Job Roles

Camera Operator

Self Employed or Contracted?
With camera operating, you tend to go freelance and get contracted for the video work. If you work in a studio with lots of filming dates, you will be more than likely employed by the production company.

What is the wage? Are you paid weekly or monthly?
The current rate of pay for operating a camera for a ten hour day working on a TV/documentary is £285, commercials is £411 and TV news is £227, but this all depends on your experience and skill level,.

Financing in Marvel Studios

As Marvel had started as a comic book publisher, they had managed to build up a great profit growth to start converting the popular comic book franchise into TV series and then into cinematic films. According to WikiPedia, Marvel had arranged a seven-year development deal with 20th Century Fox to cover markets in the United States and internationally.

Technical Development in Marvel Studios

Marvel had started their series of movies working with 20th Century Fox creating titles such as Daredevil and Fantastic Four using 35mm film cameras. Fantastic Four had used Panavision cameras and lenses while Daredevil had used the Arriflex 435 and the Moviecam Compact. Going back three years before Daredevil, Marvel studios seemed do have used a Panavision in X-Men in 2000.

Research into Media Jobs

Camera Operator

What does a Camera Operator do?
A Camera Operator's job is taking control of the camera. They also work with the Director of Photography (DoP) on choosing the positioning of the camera and the lenses and extra equipment on the camera. Many Camera Operators specialize in precision equipment, such as Remote Heads or Steadicams.

Screen Printing Design Process - T-shirt

I tried to fit the gun used in the thriller into my design because I felt the movie was based around the gun.

Creating Ad Campaigns: Research

According to the well-known user updated website, Wikipedia, Warner Brothers launched their official website to represent The Dark Knight Rises in May 2011. They took advantage of the website’s popularity to start a viral marketing campaign. This was done by when a user was to open up the website, an “encrypted audio file” was played (which has been described by users as a chanting sound). When the audio file was “decrypted”, it would give a link to the film’s official twitter account. This would then lead to every time a person would comment on the social network account, a pixel would then be removed from the website to in turn, reveal the first official image of a character known as Bane. This would give people an insight to the latest enemy that Batman could be facing.

Consumer Behaviour

Consumer behaviour is looking into the psychology of consumers. Consumers have a specific way of thinking, feeling or reason for selecting between alternatives, sometimes this is because of the brand, price, retailer or value for money. Consumers can be influenced easily by media, reputation, recommendations and/or reviews. When a consumers knowledge is limited on a certain topic, they can be easily influenced on their outcome.

Advertising Placement

Advertising placement is a form of advertising, choosing how to implement advertisements so that they are successful at getting the attention of an audience so that they can give people information of what they are advertising. Product placement can be used to have someone using a specific product advertised discretely by a character using it on a TV show, movie or music video. Sometimes a made up alternative with a similar name is used to suggest a specific product that they do not have permission to use, this is product displacement. An example of product displacement is in an episode of The Simpsons they use a computer/electronics company called Mapple to suggest they were talking about the company Apple, they also went a step further and used a logo similar to the Apple logo by using an apple with two bites instead of one.

Audience Profiling

Some TV programs are aimed at specific audiences, audience profiling is knowing your audience to make your way of showing your media more effective. Audience types can include: age, gender, educational qualification, work experience, financial background, field of work, interests, mood, orientation, bias, food habits, religious background, physique, health condition. Some of these types might not suit all situations but the most often used ones are age and gender.

The demographic of a particular show's audience is also measured. This is often notated in an abbreviated form,[2] e.g.:
  • P2+ = Persons aged 2 or more
  • P12-34 = Persons aged 12 to 34
  • P18-49 = Persons aged 18 to 49
  • A18-34 = Adults aged 18 to 34
  • Men 18-34
  • Women 18-34
- Wikipedia

It's more useful to aim towards a specific target audience than to aim for anyone, because you'll have the right people interested in the topic. Younger generations prefer information to be simple and straight forward a, older generations prefer information to be more detailed and in depth.

Audience Data

When something is aired, production companies need to know the size of the audience at certain intervals. This data is audience data. This can tell if a specific show is successful so that people putting money into it know they are getting their monies worth. A TV network will not put a program on if a more successful program can make better use out of the time slot. Another example is advertisement companies, they need to know how many people will be watching the advert and if it's worth spending the money for having the advertisement on at that time.

Audience data can be involved in many forms of media newspapers, magazines, books and other forms of payed media can be calculated through amount of sales, where as websites, free online videos and music can be calculated through amount of traffic.

Demographics are ways of interpreting the audience data so that it's quick and easy to understand. In the
media business time is very important and shouldn't be wasted. This can also be useful for showing members of the public the information as most of them may not understand a lot of the technical talk, they just want a simple way to read the information.

Most audience data is calculated digitally, as it's a large amount of data and would take too long for people to process and sometimes the figures are required to be looked at near live. To have a computer to process all the information is much more reliable.

Conventions of a Thriller

Key Conventions

  • Protagonist - "The good guy"/The main character.
  • Antagonist - "The bad guy"/The main opponent to the Protagonist.
  • Suspense - Building up the tension, making sit on the edge of their seat.
  • 'Theatre of the Mind' - Making the viewer feel involved within the thriller.
  • Make it Personal - The Protagonist has a strong reason to solve the problem.
Thrillers are a great way of being creative. There are a variety of ways of telling the story just by the way it is shot and edited. In Jaws, there's the use of the trombone shot where the camera is on a dolly moving in one direction and the camera is zoomed to the other. This gives and effect where the main subject is the same size and framing where as the background changes size in the frame giving a distorted effect making it look as if the person has had a sudden realisation. We also have the dutch angle that gives a strange sort of look. When there's a dutch angle, you know something's not right.

Target Audience
People tend to get bored of the same easy to get story line and what a bit of excitement in the movie where they have to keep guessing and their brain is more active. Overall, the main target audience is most likely young adults as their minds are more focused on these types of things.

Robert McKee's Key Conventions of a Thriller

- Protagonist
- Antagonist
- Suspense
- 'Theatre of the Mind'
- Make it Personal
- Protagonist must be at the mercy of the Antagonist
- Twists and turns

Dramatic Irony
- Dramatic Irony is where the viewer possesses more information than the characters.
- We might even know how the story end
- Therefore our focus of attention is concern for the characters involved.

Research Techniques For The Creative Media Industries - Unit 3

The Purpose of Research

Building Suspense and Tension in a Scene From Misery (Reiner 1990)

  • Make-up - Sweat on forehead and clothes.
  • Expanding key moments - Making them last longer.
  • Building up 'obstacles' for each character to overcome (e.g. wheelchair/narrow doorways).
  • Music becomes more intense as she approaches.
  • Close ups of more important elements - Door lock, feet walking etc.
  • Paul's POV shot - Puts viewer in his shoes.
  • Use of silence to create tension - What is going to happen next?
  • Variety of shots and angles - Editing quickens towards the end of the scene (parallel shots e.g. He locks door, she unlocks front door).
  • False hope for protagonist (e.g. broken phone).
