Marvel had started their series of movies working with 20th Century Fox creating titles such as Daredevil and Fantastic Four using 35mm film cameras. Fantastic Four had used Panavision cameras and lenses while Daredevil had used the Arriflex 435 and the Moviecam Compact. Going back three years before Daredevil, Marvel studios seemed do have used a Panavision in X-Men in 2000.
In 2008, Marvel had released Iron Man still using 35mm film, mainly Panavision cameras. Most of their movies at the beginning has been shot in the aspect ratio of 2.35:1 giving it a nice widescreen feel. The Incredible Hulk (2008) had been shot again in 35mm film with Arriflex (235 and 435) cameras and also again Panavision cameras. Iron Man 2, shot in 2010 had been shot with Panavision cameras, but this time they'd also used IMAX cameras with a 70mm film as well as 35mm films.
Looking at a more recent movie, Avengers Assemble (2012), Marvel Studios have used digital as well as film cameras. The 35mm cameras include Arri Alexa, Panavision Primo and the Arriflex 435. Marvel Studios have also used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 7D because of their cinematic quality, ease of use, small sizing, and great capability. The aspect ratio for this was 1.85:1.
In conclusion, during their movies, they have kept to using mainly Arriflex and Panavision cameras on 35mm film, but only recently started moving to digital. It is possible that future movies could start depending on DSLR cameras more because of their option of lenses and without the rolling of films, they are a lot more quieter. Considering that DSLR's are only limited to 1920x1080 resolution, they are no as suited to cinema displays as 2k-5k resolution cameras. Marvel may not have upgraded to using cameras like RED's because of their pricing, but with the new option of Canon C300's, a 4k resolution camera will be more available at a lower budget.
